Wooster is the county seat of Wayne County in northeast Ohio, with a population of around 26,000. It is best known as the home of the College of Wooster, a well-regarded liberal arts college that has anchored the city since 1866. The college sits near the center of town, and the neighborhoods surrounding it have a high concentration of older homes - two-story wood-frame Victorians and Colonials with steep rooflines, wide front porches, and original windows that give this part of the city a distinct historic character. Wooster's downtown public square is surrounded by older commercial and residential buildings, and the streets closest to the square tend to have the city's oldest housing. Moving outward from the historic core, postwar ranch and split-level homes from the 1950s and 1960s make up the bulk of the residential neighborhoods on the west and south sides of the city.
The housing stock in Wooster is more varied in age and style than most of the smaller cities in our service territory, which is one of the things that makes working here interesting. Pre-1900 Victorian homes and 1960s brick-veneer ranches have different insulation needs, different moisture profiles, and different access challenges. We work on both types regularly. Neighboring Ashland, OH to the north shares some of the same older housing characteristics, while Mansfield, OH to the northwest is the largest city in our service area and where our operation is based.
